I think the Gutenprint driver tried to trick CUPS-and may have had some success-by sending image data in one packet and control data in another. That is, they won't work with a standard USB backend. One of the things I think he discovered is that there were certain Selphy printers that need an "intelligent spooler". He has done a lot of work over the past year or so. There is a relatively new maintiner for the Canon code at Gutenprint. So no version of the Gutenprint CP800 driver ever worked? And with Lion, it was changed again so that drivers were downloaded from Apple, providing the vendor supplied the driver to Apple.

I don't have this printer but at the point where you select the CP800 and it shows that Apple does not have software, change the menu to "Select printer software" and then type in CP8 and the driver should be listed.
